People of the Dawnland
Who were the first Vermonters? People of the Dawnland will introduce students to the earliest Vermont residents. A hands-on group discussion addresses the food, clothing and shelter of the indigenous Vermonters. A map exploration and discussion helps your class to understand where native people lived in the eastern United States and New England and what happened to change their lives forever. Listening to Abenaki music and stories gives the class the opportunity to learn about the oral traditions of the Abenaki and compare the stories and music to that which we hear today.
The class will view and sketch Native American Addison County artifacts from from the Henry Sheldon Museum collection and learn their uses. We end our presentation with a short exercise designed to encourage students to think about stereotypes and how they affect us today.
