Westward from Vermont

Grades 3-8

Take a trip from Vergennes, Vermont to Illinois or Wisconsin just like the 1836 wagon train travelers from Bridport!  Learn about the routes Vermonters and others followed on their journeys to the mid-west by playing the Westward from Vermont Travel Game, produced by Museum staff and volunteers.  The game is based on details from letters in the Museum archives which describe the journeys as well as the difficulties of settling in a new territory.  Students will work in “wagons” as families to make decisions along the way that can change the course of their family’s journey.

During a tour of the historic Judd-Harris House students learn to make decisions about what items to take along to their new homes.  Time is spent discussing what is needed in the new place and what can be taken in their wagon!

Students will use our reproduction 19th century dollhouse and wagon to learn how to load their wagon, choose the most important items to bring along and what to leave behind.

Younger scholars will enjoy dressing in our reproduction 1830s-1840s childrens’ outfits.

Westward from Vermont is supported by grants from the Vermont Humanities Council & Neat Repeats.

Please allow 2 hours for this program.
