The definitive nineteenth century history of Addison County! Two volumes include historical and demographic overviews of the county followed by sections devoted to each town. Although Smith is largely concerned with accounts of successful and/or eccentric individuals, the discussions of cultural history, natural characteristics, the economy and politics in The History of Addison County provide an invaluable view into the consciousness of nineteenth century Vermonters.

History of the Town of Shoreham, Vermont, from the Date of its Charter, October 8th, 1761, to the Present Time

Provides a mid-nineteenth century view of the history of Shoreham, Vt., a lakefront town in Addison County which at that time was still comprised by agricultural land interspersed between two dense developments, Larrabee's Point on the Lake and the milling center of Richville on the Lemon Fair River. A good resource for a mid-nineteenth century perspective on the Lake and its tributaries.

A Narrative of a Tour through the State of Vermont, from April 27 to June 12, 1789, by the Revd Nathan Perkins of Hartford

Reverend Nathan Perkins' account of his cheerless journey through Vermont by horse in the late eighteenth century. The diary makes for tedious reading, but provides a useful view of travel conditions in Vermont during the settlement period.

Rev. Samuel MacClintock's Journal, 1760

In his brief journal, Reverend Samuel MacClintock describes his experiences in the Champlain Valley during the French and Indian War. MacClintock's regiment was responsible for the completion of the Crown Point Military Road, which would later provide a path for settlers in the Champlain Valley. This reprint by the Crown Point Road Association includes supplementary material on the war and MacClintock's regiment.

 Vermont Quarterly Gazetteer, no. 1, Addison County, July 4, 1860

A reprint of the first volume of Abby Hemenway's Vermont Quarterly Gazetteer, first published in 1860, which later became The Vermont Historical Gazetteer. Hemenway collected twenty-three Addison County town histories by local authors for this volume; histories are arranged in alphabetical order by town name and provide a nineteenth-century perspective on the Lake, Otter Creek and local rivers and streams.

Voyages of Samuel de Champlain, 1604 – 1618

The three-volume memoir of the French explorer and geographer Samuel de Champlain. In Volume I, Chapter VI, he describes the discovery of Lake Champlain and his fateful first encounter with the Iroquois at Ticonderoga.
