When Carmen Lizardo began exploring the Stewart-Swift Research Center, she found few records of people of African-American descent in the archives. Her collage speaks to the absence of Black people in the archive. She writes: “I used images of two unknown women of African-American descent, utilizing the idea of the absence of representation of people of color in the archives of the Stewart-Swift Research Center. To support this idea, the images were incorporated into objects, walls, and spaces available in the museum.
