Join the Henry Sheldon Museum and students in Professor Carrie Andersen’s seminar Between Art, Craft, and Industry: Textiles and Migration in New England to make a community Welcome Blanket.
Welcome Blanket is a platform for engagement that transforms the abstract concept of immigration into a tangible crowd-sourced artistic action. We ask you to use your head, heart, hands, and histories to craft the country we wish to see. Woven into the fabric of our country is a fundamental idea: our diversity, our multiple perspectives, and our personal stories make the United States great.
Knitters are invited to make a square for our community’s Welcome Blanket. The community project will kick off on Sunday, November 15 from 2-4 pm at the Humanities House (115 Franklin Street, Middlebury). Please RSVP on the sign up sheet. After November 15, kits will be available at the Sheldon Museum for pick up Wednesday - Saturday from 10 - 4 pm. Completed squares should be returned to the Museum by December 31, 2026.
The blanket will be displayed alongside other Welcome Blankets for the 2027 season at the Henry Sheldon Museum. After the exhibit ends, the Welcome Blankets will be given to a refugee resettlement groups as a tangible gift of welcome to our newest neighbors.
