The Stewart-Swift Research Center provides access to rich resources for Addison County genealogical research. The Reading Room houses county, state, and town histories; census records; birth, marriage, and death records from Middlebury and some surrounding towns; cemetery indexes; lists of marriages and deaths in Middlebury newspapers from 1801 to 1900; church records; the People File, where genealogical inquiries are archived; and more. Addison County Town Clerks Offices: Note: each clerk operates independently, some may also have access to church and other records stored at their offices; birth, marriage and death records may be incomplete for earlier years, as Town Clerks were not required to keep such records before 1857.

Addison County Probate Court : 7 Mahady Court, Middlebury, VT 05753 · (802) 388-2612

Note: the court may have records of estate settlements of people who died in Addison County after 1824, mainly for the northern part of the County; and after 1852 for the southern districts. Earlier records were destroyed in two separate fires, when the County was divided into two probate districts.
