Newspapers, Periodicals & Magazines
Since the early 19th century, Middlebury has published its own newspaper. At times there were two or three simultaneously published weekly newspapers including: Middlebury Mercury, National Standard, Anti-Masonic Republican, Vermont American, Vermont Telegraph, Green Mountain Argus, Middlebury Free Press, Middlebury Galaxy, Middlebury Register, Addison County Journal, Middlebury People’s Press, Vergennes Vermonter, Valley Voice, and since 1946, Addison County Independent. The Stewart-Swift Research Center houses almost a complete collection of these newspapers dating from 1801 through 2014. Please check the below database for specific holdings.
The Center also holds small runs of newspapers from nearby Bristol, Vergennes, and Brandon and several volumes of the Civil War and Spanish War era national newspapers. In addition, it also houses a sizable collection of periodicals and magazines published between 1830s -1940s covering such topics as: agriculture, education, youth, social life, health, gardening, politics, satire, religion, fashion, spiritualism, women issues, and more.
