Sculptures of perseverance by chuck herrmann
After coming to Vermont as a teacher at the Bristol Elementary School, Chuck Herrmann opened Woodware on Route 7 South in Middlebury, where he sold wood products manufactured or crafted locally. Soon Herrmann’s historian and artistic instincts led him to study the native woods of Vermont, the lives of the craftsmen, and the history of the wood industries in the Green Mountain State.
He left teaching and devoted all his efforts to Woodware, a destination stop for tourists and a prime furniture venue for locals. Since selling the store, Chuck has concentrated most of his energies on continuing his study of wood manufacturers and craftsmen in Vermont, writing, and carving his imaginative, abstract interpretations of wildfowl crafted from varied woods.
These Ukraine-inspired carvings reflect Chuck’s emotional response to the ongoing tragedy in Ukraine. The poignant sculptures embody the strength and determination of the Ukrainian people.
